| SF value: | • SF
determines how robustly LoRa transmits the signal: this actually determines how much time LoRa uses to send one
bit of information. • Higher SF → lower speed, but greater distance and lower required SNR. • Lower SF → higher speed, but a stronger and cleaner signal is needed. The lower this value, the longer the battery life. |
| SNR for Signal-to-Noise Ratio (signal-to-noise ratio) | This value indicates the quality of that signal relative to the existing noise: Positive: the signal is much stronger than the noise. Negative: the noise is stronger than the signal. The higher this value the better. But negative is not always a problem. |
| RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) | This indicates the absolute strength of the received signal (in dBm); the rule applies here that the higher this value, the stronger the signal. It becomes problematic with RSSI values below -125 to -130 dB. |
| Example 1: | RSSI = -120 dBm, SNR = +8 dB → weak signal, but of good quality. |
| Example 1: | RSSI = -90 dBm, SNR = -15 dB → stronger signal, but a lot of noise; the connection may be less reliable. |
